A Gallimurfry of Llanfrothen ‘facts’

Dear
In the last few months we have made further progress in our joint research. This is an attempt at adding and summarising ( i.e confusing you even more)
1. In finding Mary Williams, the daughter of Margaret Lloyd = William Lewis and the wife of William Dafydd Caeglas, another big ‘ forest’ has been added and an a connection made to Robert Roberts, Erw fawr. This discovery has connected us with many more Llanfrothen people and also with a number of other genealogists, far and wide ( Dorothy from Manod, Wynn from Cardiff, Glyn Williams from Blaenau,& Peter Bryfdir from Caernarfon). This is a study in itself! We must not overlook the fact that there are six other off springs of MLl & WL to be accounted for yet.
2. The D.D. Williams/Bryfdir/ ap Glaslyn etc. relation has been resolved
3. Some of our ancestors will appear in T. Ceiri Griffith’s new book- due out in August 2003.
4. On Glaslyn, Angela and Arfon have completed their work on Ap Glaslyn. We hope that they will offer this for publication in The Mer. Hist Soc. Jour. In the near future. I have collected together information on Ty Llaeth Parc Llanfrothen (see FelRh091- enclosed- for comment & visit).Photographs of Glaslyn’s old home, Penygroes, Nanmor have recently been taken.
5. A plaque has been placed at Hafoty to commemorate William Lewis’s Sunday School. A report was made to the Cambrian News by Nan. Lwsia & Emyr were pleased – we thanked them for their hospitality.
6. Much information is coming to light about the importance of Caeglas in the history of Llanfrothen through the ages - and it various family connections. The story of Caeglas itself is very interesting and is been worked on by Giovanna eg see will of Rhydderch ab Owen and the write up by Croesorydd on the descendants of William Lewis living at Caeglas.
7. Via Nan etc., we see that William Lewis’s mother, Margaret Edward ( wife of Lewis Morde cai) has been connected to the Wern ( OS 520 421) /Prys family in somewhat unclear manner! (see Sheelagh/Nan’s correspondence - June 2003). We need to resolve the uncertainty.
8. A number of Llanfrothen wills have been photocopied, deciphered and typed e.g. Rodderch ab Owen, Gabriel Thomas of Berthlwyd & Caeglas, Ffoulk Jones, and his sister Mary Jones.
9. More information has been gathered by Sheelagh, about Lowri/ Deborah Robert ( Llanfrothen /Dyffryn Clwyd family) A write up, will of Deborah, her marriage & death certificates of her husband John Roberts are attached. .Margaret Pritchard (wife of D. Williams of Ty N.Caeglas and W.Lewis’s D.i.L ) burial details/grave has still not been found.
10. No progress has been made on a CD Rom. Of the family history, I must urge my son Alun.,-it will not be put on the web!!

May I suggest that some form of simple reference be given to document/letters we produce. It could be
personal, name, origin, & date or where copied from whom/where. It helps when one is making a back reference and comments.
I think that genealogy is similar to astronomy the further you look into space-time the dimmer it gets. Work does not seem to abate and as the ‘ facts’ multiply it raises more questions and gets foggier. A cynic once said “forward progress in genealogy is made when you take a step back ( in time).” We keep plodding on regardless !!
Love and regards, Robby & Robin,
Dist:- Angela, Edgar, Giovanna, Janet, Nan & Sheelagh
