Notes on the children of Sarah Jones and Griffith Davies (I)

(1) – Sarah (Davies) Jones

(Glan y Pwll Cottage)

(1841 – 1880) (39yrs )

Our first bit of information we get about Sarah is of her birth 28.11.1841 at Llan Ffestiniog and baptism. She was the first born to Sarah Jones of Bryncyfergid and Griffith Davies. (a.k.a. John Williams) There are anomalies between the Church Records and those of the Registrar's. Was she born at Bryn Cyfergid ?

We see from the census of 1851 that she was at y Ddôl, Tanygrisiau aged 9 with her siblings Margaret 7,, Morris 5 & Elin 2 and parents .

She married a Thomas Jones who was an engineer ( quarry or railway- we do not know). If she married when she was 25 this would be in 1866. Sarah’s early death is recorded on her memorial stone (m.i. 1027 at Llan Ffestiniog) 1.2.1880, aged only 38. Thomas Jones, her husband, died 28.2. 1891 aged 53,,just 8 months before Griffith Dafydd (1) died. Also recorded on the monument is  ‘eu hanwyl Tommy’ 5.10.1888 aged 16.(b.1872)

Three orphaned children viz. Sarah, Jennie and Griffith were left to fend for themselves. We do not know their ages but is likely to be in their early teens. In his will dated October 1891 their grandfather left his orphaned grandchildren £ 20 each. With a large family we suppose that they did not go without.

Sarah (junior) married a Griffith Jones and there was no issue. Jennie married a W. Roberts and there was one daughter named Dora. Thomas, (Tommy) mentioned above, would not have a family. Griffith Jones(1877-    aged 4 in 1881 at Felenrhyd  ) also married -  who?  There was a boy and a girl from the union. Is there any more information about Sarah’s descendants?

(2)     Margaret (Davies) 1st Thomas Rees, 2nd John Ellis Roberts, Bryn Goleu

(1844 – 1896) (52 yrs)

(see separate notes by Sheelagh Williams, ref         )

1) Elita, 2) Elizabeth,(Modryb Lisa Bryn Golau) 3) Morris, 4) Mary, 5)Ellis, 6) Ellis, 7) Griffith.

( 3) Morris Davies

( 1846 – 1866??)

Morris was the first son and third child of Sarah Jones and Griffith Davies. We see him at Y Ddôl aged 5. He would have been named after his grandfather Morris Jones Bryn Cyfergid. The only information we have after this that he was killed in a quarry accident. We do not know when and where and how old he was.  Did he marry and did he have a family? He could have appeared in the 1861 census, aged 15, if he was alive. He does NOT appear on the Cynfal Fawr census of 1871 (age 25)-of course he might be living somewhere else.  We need more information. We ,as yet, have not found any information i.e gravestones at Llan, Bl.Ffestiniog, Maentwrog or Llanfrothen. Was the body recovered? If we can find the date of the accident we could find an accident and/or a coroner‘s report available at Bangor. Any newspapers reports of the accident ?

(4)  Ellin (Davies), Evans

Bwlch Bryn ,Minffordd

( 1849 -         )

The fourth child, Ellin was first recorded in the 1851 census, aged 2, at Y Ddôl, Tanygrisiau with her parents Sarah Jones & Griffith Davies. It was likely that she was born at Y Ddôl, in 1849. We see her aged 22 at Cynfal Fawr on the census of 1871. She was married circa 1874 to a William Jones and they lived at a little farm called Bwlch Bryn at Minffordd. He hung himself at Bwlch Bryn.? In spring of 1891, when the census was taken at Felenrhyd Fawr, she is recorded as Ellin Jones and widowed.  In October 1891, her father willed £80 to  his daughter Ellen Evans. So we can deduce that she had married a William? Evans, in the meantime i.e the summer of 1891. ‘They’ are buried at Minffordd cemetery but we do not know their dates of death.( Nel is going to check the m.i.). There were three children viz. Sarah ( unmarried – she drowned at Felinheli ?), Dorothy (married but no issue) and Griffith who died !? We need to know more about this family.

(5)  Griffith Davies (II)

(1853 –1937) (84 yrs)

Married Catherine Roberts of Tanyrallt, Cwm Prysor in 1883

Children were:-     1) Mary  2) Sarah,    3) Kate,   4) Griffith (III),  and 5 Laura

see separate note ref. FelRh (yet to be no.)  We need to gather & write the story of Wenna , Enid and Laura We have the story of Kate and Griffith(III)

(6)    Mary Davies Llwyn y Gell

(1856 – 1884)  (28yrs)

Mary was the 6th child of the Felenrhyd fawr family, and was born 6.1.1856 at Tai Isaf Ffestiniog ( near Ty Isa Farm we presume – by the church) and likely to have been baptised at St Mihangel Llan Ffestiniog , (where her parents were married in 1841)  She was probably named after her Aunty  Mary (her mother’s sister – Mary (nee Jones) Joseph of Bryn Cyfergid/ Tyddyn gwyn Mawr). In 1871 she is recorded at Cynfal Fawr aged 14. In 1881 she is at Felenrhyd Fawr, aged 25, with her parents and Lowry, her sister. Two years later she married a John Roberts on the 13.10.1883. She died at Llwyn Gell, Bl. Ffestiniog- during childbirth- it is rumoured- on the 5th (sic) of February 1884 aged only 28. It unlikely the child survived.  She is buried at Llan Ffestiniog (m.i.1028) – next grave to her sister’s, Margaret  Also in this grave is Elizabeth (7.1.1898 –40yrs old)–the second wife and the husband John ( J.)? Roberts (31.1.1907 – 56 yrs). We do not know if there were any children from this secondary family. Llwyn y Gell is but 400 yards from where her sister lived at Glanpwll Cottage

We spoke to Olwen Jones, the Registrar at Blaenau Ffestiniog on Wed.13.3.2002 and she confirmed most of our inaccurate information. Mary was born 6.1.1856 at Tai Isaf Ffestiniog.( where ever these are - there is a Ty isaf farm at Ffestiniog ). She married a John Roberts on the 13.10.1883. Four month later she died of Puerperal convulsion ( childbirth difficulties), on the 15th (sic).2.1884

 (7)  Laura (Davies) –Jones

(1860 – 1907) (47yrs)

Married William Jones, Y Ffôr ca.1882

Children 1) Sarah, 2) Mildred 3)William 4) Mary 5) Laura (Twins) 6) Margaret  7) Elen 8) Ann (twins)

(see separate notes ref. FelRh ? these need to be written up)

Notes:-

1.      We see from the above details of the family that the 7 children were born in the period 1841 to 1860.The later part of the 19th century ,early 20th (1860 –1907) was not a very happy time for them as a family, with the early deaths of three of the daughters aged 28,38 & 47. Morris died in a quarry accident circa 1866 aged about 20. Similarly also did their son- in- law, Thomas Rees aged 30. In 1991 three of the grandchildren were orphaned and Griffith Dafydd (I) died in 1991 and Sarah in 1899.  Also other infant grandchildren died. A son in law hanged himself.

2.      Recorded in 1891, at Gelli Green, is a Mery (sic) Davies, niece (of Griffith Davies I) aged 7 ( a scholar born in 1884 at Ffestiniog. For her to be a niece she would be the daughter of Griffith Davies’s brother – there is a big age gap. Who is this Mery? Was she a granddaughter i.e. the daughter of Griffith Davies (II) and Catherine ( married 1883) who were living at Felenrhyd fawr, adjacent farm? She could be the niece of Elin, the census informant. I don’t know!
