Relationship of Griffith D(1),to Glaslyn, Bryfdir & DDWms (Cae’rllwynog)

(Y Llinellau Coll)

In his book  “Diwydiannau coll”, Bob Owen ( p59 - courtesy of Edgar Parry .Williams.) states that William Lewis was the great grandfather of Ap Glaslyn, Bryfdir & D.D.Willimas without giving any evidence, reference or proof.

We have already established and defined the family connection between Griffith Davies(1) & Glaslyn- their father and mother, respectively (David & Elizabeth) were the son and daughter of WL.

In FelRh021WmLewis, we see that WL & Margaret Lloyd his wife, had twelve children in all. Three of them at least died young and would not have a family. How many survived, married and had a family? We do not know, but there is a good chance that a number of them did and they could be traced in the parish of Llanfrothen.

Therefore, it could well be that one or two were the GRANDPARENTS of Humphrey Jones (Bryfdir) and the Rev. D. D. Williams We need to research and prove the linkage; if it exists; as stated by Bob Owen.

There are two complimentary approaches to the problem. a) ‘top down’ approach from the children of WL and b) a ‘bottom up’ approach from the ancestor of Bryfdir (DDW). Below we tabulate  the 9 surviving children of WL. There are three boys and six girls, all with the surname of Williams. In the second column we add 25 years to their birth dates to get an approximation of their marriage date. In the third column we give the entry no. in the book of Merioneth Marriage 1754 to 1812. The 5th col. gives the date of the marriage and the last col. gives the age of the person in the 1st col. on the date of the marriage. All the marriages were recorded at Llanfrothen .

b) Bryfdir’s parents were Mary Roberts & John Jones.  Roberts & Jones surnames can only originate from WL’s daughters.   WL’s sons would generate different surnames viz.. Lewis, Griffith & David giving surnames Lewis, Griffiths & Davies respectively; NOT Williams. This was the custom at the time.

From the table there are no suitable Roberts fitting our requirements; i.e. Mary Roberts’s father. However there are two possibilities on the Jones side viz

·        Margaret, No 98 marrying Rbt Jones in 1806

·        and Mary, No.73,  marr. Edward Jones in 1803.

Either of these two couples could be the parents of John Jones ( Bryfdir’s father) and there is a 50 year gap (2 generations) to Bryfdir’s birth in 1867.

Similarly, we can look at DDWs (1862 – 1938) linage. His parents were Grace ( b.1829) & David Williams (b.1815) of Garthllwynog, Croesor. If we look at D. Williams first, there are 3 possibilities

  1. One of the six daughters. of WL could have married some other   X? Williams We see Mary Williams No.236 marrying a Wm Williams in 1807 fits the bill.
  2. One of the three boys of WL. This supposition is not admissible, as mentioned above.
  3. It could be Alice, which we have no records. Did she marry? To Whom, Where and When? Or did she die young or was a spinster- ruling here in/out.?

Until we know the maiden name of Grace we cannot proceed on this linage.

Note that there are two Mary Williams (unless she was married twice within 4 years) A Mary Williams (73) married Edward Jones and a Mary Williams (236) married Wm. Williams

Note

  1. There is a need to look at these three weddings 1803, 1806 & 1807 in some more details, but they do not give the name of the father of the bride nor the groom !! We have to proceed to the baptismal record of the 1st child.
  2. Ap Glaslyn(1857-1934), D.D.Williams (1862 – 1937) & Bryfdir (1867 – 1947), being of the same age, could be first cousins.
  3. Bryfdir, mentions in his poem “ Bro fy Mebyd” how the family sold out at Ty Newydd Caeglas, when he was about 3 in 1870 – after his fathers death. Forty years earlier about 1830,the same drama happened to Griffith Davies(1) (14yrs old ?) after the death of his father in 1821. Both left Croesor for Ffestiniog
  4. Need to talk to Nan Williams Bl. Ffestiniog- Sunday 7th for more details regarding the above subject.
